Council Director, Girls on the Run –

Position Profile – paid part-time position to when the right person is found, hopefully by March 1 with formal training to be conducted in Mid-June at the Girls on the Run International HQ in Charlotte, NC.

The Girls on the Run Executive Director (ED), also called Council Director (CD), must possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of girls in third through eighth grades. The Girls on the Run program provides a safe and interactive way to learn about healthy living which includes an introduction and education on important topics such as goal-setting, cooperation, healthy decision-making, and self-respect, while training for a 5K event.   The innovative curriculum teaches girls to listen and open up while also encouraging them to commit to a healthy lifestyle, and harness the inner strength that they possess. Our important mission is accomplished by giving girls the tools to make positive choices for a healthy body and mind, while reducing the many risks they face today.
The GOTR Executive Director is responsible for the overall implementation of the GOTR mission. The Executive Director reports to the GOTR local Board of Directors. The Executive Director’s job responsibilities include developing and implementing the overall strategy and vision for the Girls on the Run program and all organizational and operational aspects of GOTR including its administration, financial operations, revenue generation, program development and activities, personnel management and strategic planning. Some of the key responsibilities falling within these areas include:
Program and Staff Management
* Attracting, developing and retaining staff
* Developing and fostering a strong and open dialogue with the Board of Directors and GOTR International
Program Development and Strategic Planning
  • Planning, in coordination with the Board and staff, for the direction and leadership of the overall program
  • Cultivating relationships with coaches, donors, parents, participants, sponsors and volunteers
  • Acting as ambassador to represent GOTR’s mission and programs
Organizational Administration
  • Developing and implementing necessary policies and procedures
  • In coordination with the Board, Identifying and planning for infrastructure growth to parallel growth of program
  • Develop relationships with the local media and serve as the GOTR primary contact to market the program and build additional community support
Budget and Financial Management
  • Planning and managing GOTR’s budget and finances in coordination with the Board
  • Overseeing and engaging in planning and implementation of fundraising plan which may include special events and other fundraising activities and grant applications.
  • Identifying and cultivating local corporate partnerships
The ideal candidate will be comfortable engaging in both strategic activities as well as taking a hands-on role with regards to program execution and administrative issues.
Required Qualifications
  • BA or BS degree
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of demonstrated experience with organizational management
  • Demonstrated ability of building and leading teams
  • Passion for GOTR’s mission and the ability to comprehend and effectively communicate issues surrounding empowerment, self-esteem, body image and whole-person health
  • Outstanding communication skills in multiple environments and with a range of audiences (internal and external)
  • Demonstrated experience setting and managing budgets and financial forecasting
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and make efficient decisions
  • Flexible and adaptable
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in related field
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Experience with Girls on the Run (or other similar youth or wellness programs)
  • Non-profit management experience
  • Fundraising experience
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors
  • Connections to the local community

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for organizing the GOTR Final 5K held in May/June, coordinating and overseeing other members of the Race Committee.
The Girls on the Run Race Director (RD) must possess a passion for and commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of girls in third through eighth grades. This passion will drive the RD to oversee the best version of a GOTR 5K possible while inspiring all participants to complete a 5K and celebrate this accomplishment! The GOTRNW Board generally offers a stipend to the Race Director.

Race Director(s): Team leader and organizer extraordinaire
  • Oversee and act as the “go-to” person for all event questions and needs
  • Liaison between GOTRNW staff, board and 5K Crew
  • Decide on a theme and share info with GOTR Fundraising Committee and other Coordinators
  • Make sure all Required Tasks on the checklist get done
  • Work with GOTR staff to order race shirts and/or hats, race bibs, other
  • Manage budget and accounting logistics
  • Set up and confirm details regarding venue including DJ, sound system, on-site emergency care; serve as the “face” of the host on the day-of
  • Update GOTR Board at monthly meeting January-July with Follow-up report in July
  • Make sure Invitations/Thank You’s are sent to all sponsors before final payment from GOTRNW is received
Volunteer Coordinator: Can’t RUN a race w/o volunteers!
  • Work with GOTR staff to recruit, communicate to, coordinate and THANK volunteers
Marketing Coordinator: Get those butts in the seats!
  • Plan and execute all marketing, promotional and community outreach strategies to drive attendance
  • Possibly Create and Send your event page link to beneficiary and community contact lists
Fundraising/Race Sponsor Coordinator: The “Money Master”
  • Develop fundraising and supplemental revenue plan
  • Coordinate in-kind as well as cash donations
  • Stay aware of Sponsorship Benefits, making certain promises are kept
  • Invite Race Sponsors to event – see if they’d like a presence at the event
Registration Coordinator: Sell, sell, sell!
  • Work with Race Director & Marketing Coordinator to manage pre-race registrations and day-of sale strategy
  • Keep track of number of registrations & coordinate pre-race and day-of distribution of race bags
Venue/Race Course Coordinator: Every detail counts
  • Work with RD to set up lay-out of Race Village
  • Set up race course with signs, water stops, Finish Line
  • Oversee set up and break down at the event venue
