Summary of Role:

  • The position entails approximately 1.5 to 3 hours per week for 10 weeks  with additional time required on two weekend days for a four-hour training session and the GOTR 5k race.
  • Assistant coaches must be able to commit to attend at least one session per week, but can attend both. We ask each assistant coach to determine a schedule that allows her to maintain that schedule throughout the program for consistency on behalf of the girls.
  • While the assistant coach is not primarily responsible for facilitating the Girls on the Run curriculum, they are there to support the Head Coach and program participants.
  • This volunteer position may be used as a college internship, service learning project or other college credit project upon agreement of the school and Girls on the Run staff.

Core Duties/Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Understanding and believing in the mission of Girls on the Run
  • Serving as a role model and mentor for program participants
  • Attending program session on selected day(s) on a consistent basis (must be able to commit consistently to a least one practice per week)
  • Assisting with all aspects of the facilitation of the Girls on the Run curriculum
  • Attending coaches meetings in absence of head coach
  • Encouraging and cheering for all participants
  • Participating in games and workouts with the girls as needed
  • Helping plan community service project and end-of-season celebration as requested by head coach
  • Participating in the Girls on the Run 5k race


  • Strong desire to volunteer in the field of youth character development
  • Experience working with youth, especially girls in grades 3-8
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Capacity to work in a partnership with head and assistant coach(es)
  • Ability to be flexible and to improvise when needed
  • Strives to lead a healthy lifestyle
  • Planning and coordinating the end-of-season banquet


  • Female or Male
  • At least 18-years-old
  • Consent to background check
  • Attend a four-hour coaches training with Girls on the Run Northwoods staff
